Medical device company Alphatec (ATEC) has purchased all assets linked to the robotic-enabled minimally invasive (REMI) System from Fusion Robotics for a consideration of $55m.
Developed by spine experts, REMI is an intra-operative platform that incorporates navigation and robotics into spinal surgical procedures using either a 3D imaging scan or 2D fluoroscopic images of the patient.
REMI has a small, table-mounted navigation system, which helps in positioning instrumentation and implants more accurately during surgery.
The integration of a robotic navigation system into ATEC’s procedural strategy is expected to enhance surgical predictability and decrease radiation exposure, as well as improve intra-operative precision.
ATEC chairman and CEO Pat Miles said: “ATEC’s intention is to further clinical distinction by integrating actionable information into the spine’s procedural workflow.
“With our SafeOp and EOS systems, we have demonstrated prowess in identifying informational technologies and know-how that can integrate information into spine surgery’s procedural workflow.”

By GlobalDataMeanwhile, ATEC has reported that its total revenue in the first quarter of this year is expected to increase by 52% to more than $108m.
The growth is mainly driven by the rise in surgical revenue growth by more than 53% and surgical volume by around 39%, compared to the same period last year.
Furthermore, the company expects total revenue in 2023 to be roughly $450m, fuelled by surgical revenue of $393m.
