Medtech giant Medtronic has announced the introduction of live streaming to its Touch Surgery Ecosystem (TSE).
Touch Surgery Live Stream (TSLS) brings remote, real-time observation to operating rooms (OR) in more than 20 countries, enabling surgeons and trainees to conduct and attend live broadcasts of surgical procedures.
The company said that enabling the secure live streaming of procedures will eliminate geographical barriers and help realise a virtual learning environment with the benefit of being physically present. In addition, the development will enable trainees to access follow-up training through virtual coaching sessions.
Alongside the rollout of TSLS, Medtronic also announced an expansion to the artificial intelligence (AI) analytics capabilities of its Touch Surgery Performance Insights (TSPI) platform across surgical workflow, instrument, and anatomy detection.
The introduction of the 14 new performance insight algorithms is intended to expand the platform’s capability to translate surgical videos into actionable insights post-procedure for procedures including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery.
Medtronic said the rollout of the new technologies will make procedures less invasive and quicker, meaning hospitals can perform more surgeries with a higher degree of precision, as well as helping them address shortages in surgical staff by increasing training opportunities.

Medtronic recently had two patents, US patents No. 8738148 and No. 8457758, for its sacral neuromodulation (SNM) successfully upheld before US courts. The matter relates to a patent infringement lawsuit brought by the company against the California-based Axonics, who sought to invalidate Medtronic’s claim over the technology.
As a result of the ruling by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), part of US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO), a full infringement lawsuit against Axonics, which was recently acquired by Boston Scientific in a deal valued at approximately $3.7bn, can now continue.
