The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued 510(k) clearance to the new functionality for the Ethos Adaptive Radiotherapy System, developed by Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company.
The new functionality is intended to streamline daily treatment adaptation for various body areas and improve patient data connectivity.
The latest generation, which can reduce complexity, allows for easier implementation of adaptive, personalised radiotherapy.
Varian’s Ethos 2.0 version is designed to optimise clinical and operational efficiencies, providing clinical teams with a comprehensive solution.
It features enhanced algorithms within the Ethos Intelligent Optimization Engine (IOE) for more precise treatment planning and faster dose delivery.
The integration of images from the HyperSight imaging solution into the Ethos system software facilitates direct dose calculation, enabling clinicians to create treatments based on the patient’s daily anatomy with ease and accuracy.

By GlobalDataThis latest iteration of the Ethos system significantly increases the number of AI-segmented anatomical structures that can be contoured automatically, now including more than 70 structures in the head and neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and bowel regions.
This advancement aims to reduce the manual, time-intensive process of contouring.
The new generation of the Ethos system also enhances data sharing capabilities and exchange with the ARIA CORE oncology management solution, streamlining effective patient management.
Varian head Arthur Kaindl said: “Our latest Ethos system reflects our ongoing commitment to develop innovative solutions that make real-time, adaptive radiotherapy treatment easier to accomplish in any setting.
“By reducing workflow complexity, leveraging advanced, AI-powered technology, and enabling greater connectivity to patient data across our ecosystem, we continue to invest in comprehensive tools to help clinicians integrate precision throughout the patient journey.”
Data from Varian indicates that clinicians using Ethos have preferred the adapted treatment plan in 88% of cases, demonstrating its benefit for patient care.
The Ethos system offers the flexibility of online or offline adaptation, as well as conventional image-guided radiotherapy, making it a versatile option for clinicians.
