Analysts at GlobalData have identified a growth in innovative diabetes management solutions in Singapore, driven by partnerships between healthcare providers and technology innovators.
Medical device analyst Kanchan Chauhan commented: “Singapore’s innovative diabetes care initiatives showcase how technology and collaboration can reshape chronic disease management, offering a reliable and sustainable model aligned with modern healthcare needs.
“With a focus on patient empowerment and real-time engagement, these efforts not only demonstrate Singapore’s commitment to modernising healthcare but also provide a valuable framework for other nations to integrate digital health solutions into their public healthcare systems.”
She pointed to the example of the recent partnership between SingHealth Polyclinics (SHP) and the Ministry of Health Office for Healthcare Transformation (MOHT) in Singapore. The collaboration developed a diabetes management tele-monitoring platform: Optimising care of Patients via Telemedicine in Monitoring and Augmenting their control of Diabetes Mellitus (OPTIMUM).
The initiative uses Bluetooth-enabled devices, including glucometers, weighing scales, and blood pressure monitors, using technology to actively engage patients in Singapore in the management of their diabetes. The platform provides educational content, teleconsultations and real-time feedback.
An open-label randomised control trial of OPTIMUM home telemonitoring (HTM) involved 330 patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The intervention group comprised 159 individuals who received OPTIMUM HTM over six months. Compared to the control group, the intervention group showed significantly lower HbA1c by 0.34%, as well as a reduction in systolic blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as higher medication adherence.

By GlobalData“Conventional diabetes management lacks real-time monitoring and personalized education, leaving patients struggling with effective self-management,” said Chauhan.
“The SHP-MOHT partnership highlights how digital health innovations can bridge these gaps to improve patient outcomes.”
The OPTIMUM initiative is reflective of broader efforts to use technology to aid diabetes management in Singapore by the MOHT. These include the Primary Tech-Enhanced Care (PTEC) programme, born out of a collaboration between MOHT and National Healthcare Group Polyclinics. PTEC assists in broader chronic disease management by relying on home-based diagnostic tools alongside AI-enabled chatbots.
According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), there is a 14.9% prevalence of diabetes in adults in Singapore, driven by an ageing population and lifestyle changes. This is higher than the global prevalence, which the World Health Organization (WHO) reports to have been 14% in 2022 – a significant jump from 7% in 1990.
In the broader picture, the IDF reports that there are 537 million individuals with diabetes globally, 206 million of whom reside in the Western Pacific Region. By 2045, the IDF estimates that there will be 260 million diabetes patients in the region.
