Digital health is revolutionising healthcare care, driven largely by the trends of remote patient monitoring and mobile health, according to a new report.

The 2024 edition of GlobalData’s Digital Health report outlines that the healthcare industry “is being overhauled from traditional pen-and-paper methods to complete digitalisation,” catalysed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Digital methods of care were introduced rapidly to accommodate for the number of patients and the need to social distance,” it explains. “Since then, digital health methods have advanced and continue to, changing how patients receive care.”

Among the ways in which the report says digital health can improve healthcare are reducing inefficiencies, increasing access to care, lowering healthcare costs, boosting quality of care and personalising care for patients.

“Digital health will continue to transform healthcare by leveraging technologies like remote patient monitoring, mobile health, big data and more,” it adds. “Digital health will also continue to evolve through artificial intelligence and machine learning advancements that will enhance the various components of digital health devices.”

Remote patient monitoring and mobile health

The report notes remote patient monitoring and mobile health (mHealth) in particular as key trends in the wider digital market. It points to their opening up of patient data as being particularly transformational.

Remote patient monitoring acceptance and benefits

The report says: “Remote patient monitoring devices were one of the fastest-growing and most in-demand industries in 2020 and 2021, and they have demonstrated their potential to improve patient care, reduce readmissions, and facilitate early discharge.”

It explains that the collection and transmission of data outside traditional points of care using wireless, often wearable devices allows patients to remain at home and to receive a follow-up only if their condition warrants it. This can both improve patient care and increase efficiency. Remote patient monitoring can also give patients more insight into their own conditions and a greater ability to manage them.

mHealth app indications

Of mHealth, the report says: “Similar to remote patient monitoring devices, mHealth apps and electronic medical record systems have been adopted quite quickly, in part due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While the use of mHealth apps has increased quickly in recent years, they have been around for quite a while, especially health and wellness mHealth apps (calorie counters, fitness trackers, sleep trackers, etc.). However, multiple types of mHealth apps are being used more frequently and adopted by not only consumers but healthcare professionals as well.”

The report flags tracking health information, scheduling appointments, monitoring diseases or symptoms, testing for diseases and treating diseases as being among the greatest benefits of mHealth.
