Japanese photography and imaging company Fujifilm has signed a joint research agreement with the Indiana University School of Medicine to develop new medical imaging diagnostic support systems using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
The AI-powered solution will help physicians read and interpret a large number of images and detect suspicious lesions. Doctors will also be able to compare results with previous studies.
As part of the deal, Fujifilm’s image processing AI technology will be integrated with the diagnostic and clinical expertise of Indiana University.
The initial scope of the research project includes utilising Fujifilm’s AI technology to segment and quantify muscle atrophy (sarcopenia) in body images. It will also focus on detection and quantification of brain lesions in neuroradiology imaging exams.
Fujifilm plans to expand the AI technology under its EiLI brand to support diagnostic imaging, medical workflow, equipment warranty and service. The company is also partnering with AI technology vendors to increase the disease coverage of its systems.
Fujifilm aims to develop products to meet the requirements of the healthcare industry. Its medical systems offer a wide range of solutions such as digital X-ray diagnostics and radiopharmaceuticals. The company is also expanding its footprint into preventive healthcare and treatment through its diagnostic imaging technologies.
