While a number of medical device companies have geared up to fight against the COVID-19 crisis, Verdict tried to find which companies got more popular in helping to solve the crisis, through a poll.
Analysis of the poll results showed that Abbot and 3M are the first companies that came to mind for the majority of the respondents. Abbott and 3M were chosen by 27% and 25% of the respondents, respectively.
The poll included six more companies to choose from, namely Roche Diagnostics, ThermoFisher, Quest Diagnostics, Becton Dickinson and Co, bioMerieux, and Bio-Rad Laboratories.
A lesser 13% chose Roche Diagnostics as the most recalled company helping to fight the crisis, followed by ThermoFisher at 6%. The remaining four companies accounted for less than 5% of the responses, each.
It’s interesting to see that a significant 18% couldn’t recollect any of the eight companies being at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19.
The analysis was based on 391 responses received between 26 March and 08 April.

By GlobalDataAbbott and 3M’s efforts during the COVID-19 crisis
Abbott launched a rapid point-of-care test named ID NOW, for the detection of coronavirus, in March 2020. The company is producing 50,000 tests a day currently and plans to increase the production capacity of ID NOW tests to two million a month by June. The ID NOW rapid test detects a coronavirus-positive result in five minutes, while a negative result takes 13 minutes to be confirmed.
Abbott also offers coronavirus tests for its molecular laboratory instrument named m2000 RealTime, which can perform 470 tests a day and takes 6.5 hours to deliver results. The company is currently producing one million molecular tests a week for the m2000 system, which are being shipped within the US as well as being exported to other countries.
3M, which produces respirators that are one of the critical devices during the COVID-19 outbreak, started importing respirators from its overseas manufacturing operations into the US. Although the Federal administrators requested to stop exporting respirators the company manufactures in the US to Canada and Latin America, the company took a humanitarian and strategic stand by continuing to export respirators.
3M currently produces 35 million N95 masks a month in the US alone, while ten million N95 masks will be exported to the US from 3M Chinese operations initially. The N95 imports from 3M operations will be increased to 166.5 million over the next three months starting this month to support healthcare workers, the company announced on 06 April.
3M has doubled its global N95 respirators production to 1.1 billion a year in 2020 and plans to gradually double it further to approximately two billion within 12 months.
