The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in the US is set to deploy Butterfly Network’s system-wide ultrasound platform, Butterfly Blueprint, according to an announcement.
Butterfly Blueprint can be incorporated into clinical and administrative infrastructure.
With the new platform, URMC plans to bring artificial intelligence (AI)-powered ultrasound to new point-of-care settings, enhancing medical education and research as well as improving patient care.
University of Rochester Medical Faculty Group CEO and School of Medicine and Dentistry Clinical Affairs vice-dean Dr Michael Rotondo said: “Working together with Butterfly, research teams throughout the university can explore the potential of acquiring image data and deploying AI to improve patient care, medical education and clinical management.”
According to established research, point-of-care ultrasonography boosts preliminary diagnostic precision and can minimise downstream referrals and imaging expenses.
Furthermore, using bedside imaging as part of the preliminary analysis within the primary care setting causes a change in diagnosis and care management across 49.4% and 50.9% of patients, respectively.

By GlobalDataURMC officials plan to launch Butterfly Blueprint and commence the necessary employee education this year.
URMC and Butterfly Network plan to investigate and establish the usage of Butterfly Blueprint across the enterprise through various future research initiatives in planned phases.
The key aspects of the research will be AI, innovative image analysis and clinical pathways.
Specific clinical areas of focus will be point-of-care ultrasound education and curriculum; development of encounter-based workflows and best system deployment practices; integration of infrastructure; and quality assurance, compliance and three-dimensional procedural assistance.
Butterfly Network president and CEO Dr Todd Fruchterman said: “The vast majority of care decisions are made with incomplete information. With Butterfly, seeing is knowing, and the advantage of having an easily accessible, easy to use, AI-enabled imaging tool in the pocket of every practitioner means more informed, better decisions can be made earlier in care, every time.”
