In 2024, 1.7 million electrophysiology (EP) ablation procedures are forecast to occur. 20% of these will be treated by technology disruptor pulsed-field ablation (PFA). By 2030, PFA will treat 75 to 80% of EP ablation procedures.

The average selling price (ASP) of PFA catheters is $2,000 to $3,000 more than that of the standard ablation catheter. Even so, PFA catheters are becoming physicians’ preferred choice.

Unlike traditional thermal ablation methods such as radiofrequency or cryoablation, which both exert high-intensity energy, PFA creates lesions in cardiac tissue nonthermally via electroporation and within milliseconds. The shorter procedure time, coupled with a less extreme energy form, decreases the likelihood of injuring nearby structures such as the oesophagus and pulmonary vein.

Due to PFA’s higher ASP and its increasing demand from physicians, the EP ablation catheter market is expected to reach a value of $15 billion by 2033, with a forecast compound annual growth rate of 14.6% between 2024 and 2033.

Boston Scientific is spearheading the PFA market with its Farapulse system, followed by Medtronic with its PulseSelect and Biosense Webster with its Varipulse system. After receiving FDA approval at the beginning of 2024 for the Farapulse system, Boston Scientific aggressively acquired a more than 20% share of the EP ablation catheter space.

Despite Boston Scientific’s exponential growth in this market, Biosense Webster remains the US market leader in the EP ablation catheters space due to its US release of the QDOT micro tip catheter, the sales volume of which grew by 70% between 2023 and 2024 alone. Biosense Webster’s constant innovation has resulted in consistent ground-breaking product releases, which have solidified its position as the market leader in the EP ablation space.
