Stanford Health Care recently opened its new state-of-the-art hospital in Palo Alto, California, US.
With seven floors and 824,000 square feet, the US$2.1bn new Stanford Hospital doubles the size of its existing emergency department and is the only Level 1 trauma centre in the area. Level 1 status indicates that it can handle any and all aspects of trauma care.

The facility includes four floors of patient rooms, all of which are private and are fully equipped to support loved-one stays and visitation. Digital technologies enable patients to fully control their light, temperature, entertainment, and healing services in order to tailor their experience to their comfort and individual needs.
Digital technology is used throughout the hospital in order to increase efficiency and reduce errors. For instance, the facility uses pharmacy robots capable of packing, organizing, and delivering patient medicine in order to free up pharmacist time for more essential tasks. The facility also uses robots to deal with laundry and waste management in order to increase facility efficiency.
The advanced infrastructure allows for real-time tracking of devices and staff for superior inventory control. The interconnected ecosystem of devices is enabled to support over 100,000 devices streaming 4k video, and can be further expanded to 5G capabilities at a later point in time. The facility employs a virtual healthcare assistance application that enables patients to communicate with doctors, access their health data, schedule appointments and follow-ups, and easily navigate the hospital itself.
Stanford Health Care has not projected the financial gains that are expected to be realised through the integration of these advanced digital technologies, but GlobalData anticipates that the ability to seamlessly coordinate staff, drugs and medical inventory will greatly reduce overhead costs and allow Stanford Health Care to increase the value of the care it offers patients.
