Expandable fusion device for intervertebral disc space maintenance and fusion
A recently filed patent (Publication Number: US20230310171A1) describes an intervertebral implant designed to treat spinal conditions. The implant consists of several components, including two endplates, a central ramp, a driving ramp, and an actuator.
The first endplate and the second endplate each have upper and lower sides, with ramped surfaces extending from them. The first side portion of the first endplate and the second side portion of the second endplate include ramped portions. The central ramp has an expansion portion with ramped surfaces that engage with the ramped surfaces of the endplates. The central ramp also has an opening. The driving ramp, which also has an expansion portion, is connected to the endplates and has an opening that extends from one end to the other. Importantly, the opening of the driving ramp is unthreaded along its entire length.
The actuator, which extends through the opening of the driving ramp, engages with the opening in the central ramp. When the actuator is actuated in one direction, either the driving ramp or the central ramp moves in a first direction, causing the endplates to move away from each other into an expanded position. When the actuator is actuated in the opposite direction, either the driving ramp or the central ramp moves in a second direction, causing the endplates to move towards each other into a collapsed position. The first ramped portion of the first endplate and the second ramped portion of the second endplate are complementary, allowing them to nest when the implant is in the collapsed position.
The implant also includes additional features such as texturing on the upper side of the first endplate and the lower side of the second endplate for engaging with vertebral bodies, a threaded opening in the central ramp, slots in the driving ramp for receiving an insertion instrument, and a head portion on the actuator that is retained in the driving ramp.
Overall, this intervertebral implant patent presents a design that allows for controlled expansion and collapse of the implant, providing potential benefits for treating spinal conditions.
