The top five companies accounted for 18% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Johnson & Johnson filed the most robotics patents within the medical industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 16 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 11 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Intuitive Surgical with 13 robotics patent filings, Stryker (9 filings), and Globus Medical (9 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 46% share of total patent filings
The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the medical industry in Q3 2024 was in the US with 46%, followed by China (17%) and Japan (3%). The share represented by the US was 18% higher than the 29% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
