UK-based Intelligent Ultrasound Group has partnered with the National Imaging Academy Wales (NIAW) for the development of AI-based tools for ultrasound scanning.
Alongside clinically relevant AI tools, the partners will work on real-world simulator performance to enhance ultrasound education, aimed at improving clinical technique and patient outcomes.

Intelligent Ultrasound is currently developing real-time AI clinical ultrasound image analysis software to boost scan quality and workflow.
Earlier this month, the company entered its first long-term licence and co-development deal for the use of its real-time image analysis software with an undisclosed manufacturer’s ultrasound systems.
Intelligent Ultrasound also produces ultrasound training simulators designed for OBGYN, echocardiography and point-of-care sonography education.
To date, the company supplied more than 800 of its ScanTrainer, HeartWorks and BodyWorks Eve ultrasound simulators globally.

NIAW opened in August last year to assist the Diagnostic Imaging workforce, including increased training capacity for radiologists. It is funded by the government of Wales and the National Health Service (NHS) Wales.
As part of NHS Wales, the imaging academy is offering speciality training in all radiology imaging modalities, including ultrasound. NIAW serves as a diagnostic imaging hub in Wales and also focuses on radiology research and training.
NIAW director and consultant radiologist Dr Phillip Wardle said: “Working closer together, we both aim to develop simulation training and advanced deep-learning AI in ultrasound that will address the needs of current and future imaging workforce including sonographers and radiologists.
“By combining NIAW’s clinical expertise with Intelligent Ultrasound’s leading-edge in AI techniques and simulation, we intend to help trainees in Ultrasound to become proficient more quickly.”
