Medical devices manufacturer Covidien has received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Kangaroo feeding tube with Integrated Real-time Imaging System (IRIS) technology.
It is claimed to be the first commercially available disposable feeding tube with a real-time imaging system.

According to the company, the system is designed to enhance patient safety by providing visualisation for a procedure that is currently blinded.
It features a tiny camera, connected to a disposable feeding tube, which enables clinicians to identify anatomical markers during the placement of the tube and potentially aids in correct placement.
The disposable instrument uses Covidien’s IRIS technology to aid clinicians to view and save video footage in identifying key areas of a patient’s anatomy.
The system also allows clinicians to save images from the live stream and make notes associated with the image.

By GlobalDataBefore the onset of this technology, the feeding tube placement was often done blindly with the misplacement of the tube into the patient’s airway, leading to a punctured lung or even death. The Kangaroo feeding tube with IRIS technology now eliminates these risks by providing sight where medical professionals were previously blind.
The Kangaroo IRIS monitor is currently programmed with seven languages, which includes English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch.
Covidien medical supplies president Jim Clemmer said the Kangaroo feeding tube with IRIS technology was built with patient safety in mind.
“Covidien is an industry leader in nutritional delivery and enteral feeding devices and products such as the Kangaroo feeding tube with IRIS technology are designed to help improve patient outcomes and set new expectations for medical device product safety and innovation around the world,” Clemmer said.
The Kangaroo feeding tube with IRIS technology is also approved for use in Europe, Japan, Canada and Australia.
