Surgical disposable products maker Aspen Surgical Products has acquired Iowa-based Protek Medical Products for an undisclosed amount.

Protek makes single-use ultrasonic probe covers and needle guides used in tissue biopsies, fluid aspiration and vascular access procedures.

It also manufactures protective covers for medical instruments and equipment.

Protek is a supplier for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) in the ultrasound equipment space.

With this acquisition, Aspen intends to boost its portfolio of medical, patient and staff safety products sold to hospital and surgery centre markets.

Aspen also gains the rights to Protek’s patented Pull-Up probe cover technology, which is claimed to aid in providing efficiency in the clinical setting.

Aspen Surgical CEO Jason Krieser said: “Protek Medical has a long, successful history of providing effective, easy-to-use disposable products that help address cross-contamination issues in the clinical environment.

“This line is clearly synergistic with our current manufacturing and commercial operations and it supports our mission to provide high quality single-use medical devices that improve safety and efficiency for the healthcare settings that we serve.”

Protek displayed a stable track record of revenue growth and innovation, powered by its R&D capabilities, claimed Aspen Surgical Products.

Protek CEO Rick Pruter said: “Protek is very excited to team up with Aspen Surgical. This will not only broaden our customers’ access to consumable product offerings but also expand our new product development opportunities.

“Aspen’s goals align directly with our vision of optimising patient safety in the imaging market.”

Headquartered in Caledonia, Michigan, Apsen’s assets include Bard-Parker blades and scalpels, Precept personal protective equipment, surgical marking pens, orthopaedic positioners, basic wound care and instrument care products.
