Not-for-profit healthcare organisation Carilion Clinic is set to provide needle-free blood draws to patients leveraging Becton, Dickinson and Company’s (BD) blood collection device.

This initiative to use the BD PIVO Pro needle-free device is in line with the clinic’s patient-centred approach, aiming to provide a ‘One-Stick Patient Experience’ by minimising needlesticks and enhancing care quality.

The clinic will be the first health system in Virginia and the Southeastern US to offer this service.

By using the patient’s existing peripheral IV catheter line, the technology enables clinicians to draw blood, thereby reducing the need for multiple needlesticks, and helping to alleviate patient pain and anxiety.

It claims to decrease the needlestick injury risk and address issues like redraws and delays in patient care caused by traditional IV and blood collection methods.

The device will debut at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, with plans for broader availability in other hospitals of Carilion this year.

Carilion chief nursing officer Tami Frost said: “By streamlining blood draws through our new speciality vascular access team, we will save our bedside nurses valuable time, allowing them to focus on other critical aspects of patient care.”

BD noted that according to a recent Harris Poll, individuals in hospitals often face unnecessary, failed, and repeated needlesticks.

These procedures, though frequently overlooked, can be among the most traumatic parts of a hospital stay, with 51% of Americans reporting a fear of needles.

New technology and solutions to reduce needlesticks and improve care are of great interest to both patients and clinicians.

Last month, BD and Babson Diagnostics expanded their fingertip blood collection and testing technologies, extending their use to US health systems and ambulatory care settings.
