Healthcare and medical technology-orientated businesses were among the 230 companies recognised at the Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2018.
The accolade is the highest official UK award for British business and recognises companies for their contribution to four main categories: international trade, innovation, sustainable development and promoting opportunity.
Medical Technology innovator, Trio Healthcare, received an award for the second time. This year it was awarded under the Innovation category for its breakthrough patented silicone technology, which they claim if improving the lives of ostomates around the world.
Trio Healthcare describes its technology as ‘a life-changing silicone adhesive that prevents abdominal stomas from leaking and provides a range of benefits for patients and healthcare professionals’.
Trio managing Director Lloyd Pearce said: “We are delighted to win such a prestigious award for our contribution to ostomy care. Due to the stigma and embarrassment associated with body waste and bag leakage, a person’s social life and well-being is dependent on the ostomy adhesive and bag’s performance.
“Too many people around the world were suffering from leakage and irritated skin, so as a company we have made it our mission to provide an alternative solution. Our products offer reassurance and comfort, so the wearer can get on with their everyday lives without fear of sore skin.”

By GlobalDataAnother healthcare winner in the Innovation category was surgical guidance company, Endomag, which was recognised for its efforts in developing surgical tools for the more accurate removal of breast cancer.
Endomag developed a minimally invasive surgical guidance system which enables surgeons to locate early-stage breast cancer with greater precision by using magnetic sensing and nanotechnology. The technology helps to increase the amount of healthy tissue left behind and can determine whether the cancer has spread elsewhere. The company claims these techniques can improve patient experience whilst also saving hospital resources.
Endomag CEO Eric Mayes said: “We’re so pleased to receive royal recognition for what our team has been able to achieve. We pride ourselves on the relationships we’ve developed with clinicians across the world and actively use their expertise to help shape the products we develop.
“It’s a particularly proud moment for me to know that UK businesses, like Endomag, are developing products that have real impact on people’s lives. It’s vitally important that we can demonstrate that the UK is able to lead on innovation and develop products and services that improve lives in all corners of the world.”
Entry for the 2019 awards opens on 8 May and closes on the 12 September 2018.
