Meridian Bioscience has introduced its new Air-Dryable Direct RNA/DNA qPCR Blood Mix which has been designed for the development of molecular diagnostic assays that are stable at room temperature.
The new blood mix enables the direct detection of RNA from whole blood samples and is compatible with air-drying in an oven. It also maintains high activity and sensitivity.
The diagnostic assays developed with this blood mix directly amplify RNA from crude whole blood, serum or plasma.
Meridian noted that qPCR has the ability to screen directly from blood samples.
This enables quick and sensitive detection of viral infections, including HIV, HBV or HCV, as well as bacterial infections, hereditary diseases and forensic analyses.
The air-dryable technology enables fast, simple and low-cost oven-drying procedures and replaces the need for lyophilisation.

By GlobalDataThis makes the new blood mix ideal for developing cost-effective, sensitive and stable molecular diagnostic assays.
Meridian global life science commercial operations vice-president Diane Szydel said: “The Air-Dryable Direct RNA/DNA qPCR Blood Mix provides a diagnostic developer with a ready to use master mix that has already addressed all the complex inhibitors present in blood, allowing for the development of simpler and faster assays.
“In addition, Meridian’s air-dryable technology overcomes the time and cost associated with cold storage or lyophilisation, allowing manufacturers full control of their entire manufacturing workflow.”
The new Air-Dryable Direct RNA/DNA qPCR Blood Mix can also be used on crude samples, eliminating the need for an extraction step.
It uses specialised enzymes as well as an advanced buffer formulation which is pre-optimised specifically for whole blood, serum and plasma.
