The partnership combines Samsung’s knowledge of consumer technology and mobility to develop advanced tools, based on Google’s Android operating system, that can communicate with Medtronic’s neuromodulation systems.

Medtronic plans to provide real-time health data to physicians and patients by integrating neuromodulation therapies with Samsung’s technology.

The move will enable physicians to better manage therapy, track symptoms and wirelessly monitor information received from Medtronic devices.

The partnership aims to focus on allowing patients implanted with neuromodulation therapies to leverage consumer electronics such as smartphones, wearables or tablets for securely and wirelessly transmitting real-time data from their device to physicians.

Medtronic neuromodulation senior vice-president Tom Tefft said: "Medtronic is committed to solving healthcare challenges, and through this alliance we intend to create efficiencies by developing digital solutions that connect patients and healthcare providers in real-time."

Samsung Electronics America chief medical officer Dr David Rhew said: "These future solutions will help better manage the health of patients by providing them with advanced, easy-to-use tools that securely deliver real-time data to their physicians."

Medtronic and Samsung collaborated earlier this year to develop solutions for improving diabetes management.
