China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) has approved the launch of Genesis Medtech’s iReach Omnia, a powered surgical stapler with 90° articulation capability.

Developed by the company, the device is intended for use in complex laparoscopic surgeries by providing surgeons with ‘unprecedented precision’ and accessibility.

With its 90° articulation capability, the stapler also grants surgeons the ‘manoeuvrability’ and accuracy required for ‘effective’ stapling in confined areas.

The device is anticipated to decrease the necessity for several stapler firings and ‘minimise’ weak points in the staple line, thereby reducing the anastomotic leakage risk.

Colorectal cancer is said to be among the top three malignancies worldwide. The primary treatment for low rectal cancer is surgical resection, but reaching the clear margins and preserving sphincter function while reducing the complications remains challenging.

The iReach Omnia’s design specifically targets these challenges, enabling vertical cutting and stapling in low rectal resections.

Surgical staplers are essential tools in minimally invasive surgeries, offering ‘consistent’ results, reduced infection risks, and improved surgical ‘efficiency’ over manual sutures.

Traditional staplers, however, are limited by articulation angles between 45° and 60°, which can be inadequate for intricate procedures such as low anterior resection or single-port thoracic surgery, where surgeons must navigate restricted spaces within the pelvis or chest cavity.

Headquartered in Singapore, Genesis Medtech Group has a product portfolio that caters to multi-therapy medical device products.

The company’s operations claim to span the entire value chain, including research and development, production, quality management, supply chain, and sales.

In July 2023, the company expanded its presence in China with the NMPA’s approval of the ArtiSential laparoscopic surgical device.
