Spine technology company NuVasive has launched a new integrated technology platform called Pulse to enable improved surgical approaches in spine procedures.
The platform features imaging and navigation, surgical planning, neuromonitoring, radiation reduction and rod bending capabilities, which can be further extended to enhance surgical efficiency.
NuVasive noted that these functions are meant to facilitate the use of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques that could reduce blood loss, hospital stays and operative morbidity, compared to open spine surgery.
In addition, the Pulse platform has been designed to improve workflow, decrease variability and increase surgical reproducibility in the operating room (OR).
NuVasive CEO Christopher Barry said: “The Pulse platform is uniquely engineered to equip surgeons with a single platform of integrated technologies necessary to perform all spine surgeries, including minimally invasive approaches.

By GlobalDataThe new platform comes with 2D and 3D-imaging and navigation to support better line-of-sight and easy usage in the OR. It leverages the Cios Spin 3D mobile C-arm as part of the company’s alliance with Siemens Healthineers.
Pulse also integrates preoperative planning software, Integrated Global Alignment (IGA), with implant integration, alignment parameters, surgical modelling and additional tools to generate a plan before the surgery.
In addition, an automated nerve detection system with alerts is available to decrease variability and enable quick interpretation of neural information.
Pulse’s imaging system takes low-dose images and improves them into full-dose images. The platform integrates LessRay to reduce radiation exposure in the OR by nearly 80% compared to fluoroscopy.
It also features Spinal rod-bending technology Bendini that can create patient-specific rods via computer-assisted bend instructions within the OR.
OR staff will be able to simultaneously view the technologies’ imaging and insights in real-time.
A limited clinical release showed that the platform supports clinical utility throughout the surgery and can be used in all types of spine procedures.
