Aiosyn upgrades its AI-powered digital pathology quality control product

Aiosyn’s automated quality control algorithm now works with immunohistochemistry slides.

Netherlands-based Aiosyn has extended the use of its AI-powered quality control (QC) software for digital pathology by upgrading its algorithms, so it is compatible with more types of slide staining.

The company's AiosynQC solution now works with immunohistochemistry (IHC) slides, in addition to haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) slides.

The software is able to automatically flags areas in the specimen. By identifying the most common artefacts in histology images, the software ensures that pathologists, technicians and researchers only use high-quality images.

According to Aiosyn, the QC solution streamlines workflows by identifying problematic slides before they reach the pathologist and reducing the need for manual checking.

IHC staining is a backbone technique of pathology laboratories, with it being critical in diagnostic work and clinical research.

Digital pathology is a quickly growing area in healthcare. Hospitals are implementing the technology to allow greater throughput of tissue diagnosis and quicker turnaround times of analysis. Major companies such as Fujifilm and Roche are also entering the growing market.

Aiosyn chief technology officer David Tellez said: “Immunohistochemistry is an integral part of modern pathology practices, and we are excited to offer an AI-powered solution for QC compatible with IHC staining, empowering laboratories to further improve their pathology workflow.”

Separately in its portfolio, Aiosyn has also developed an AI tool to detect mitosis in whole slide images. By using deep learning, Mitosis-Breast can highlight mitotic figures in H&E slides. It is currently undergoing CE-mark certification under the EU in vitro medical device regulation.
