Johnson & Johnson (J&J) executive vice-president (EVP) and MedTech worldwide chair Ashley McEvoy will depart after nearly three decades at the company, marking a new era of leadership.

McEvoy joined J&J when she was 26 years old as an assistant product director on Tylenol. Since joining, her career blossomed as she led five businesses in the J&J family.

In an open letter shared on LinkedIn, she expressed her appreciation for the company and the opportunities she had been given. She said: “I’m proud of the way we have transformed the MedTech business into a growth-focused innovator: together over the past five years, we have taken our growth from 1.5% to 8%, deployed more than $22bn in capital in acquisitions, and pushed into new markets, including heart failure, vision, and a robotics business we built from scratch.”

McEvoy will officially depart from J&J in Q1 2024 to help with the role transition.

Tim Schmid will replace her as the new EVP and worldwide chair of MedTech, bringing over 30 years of experience to the position. He served as the company group chair of J&J MedTech Asia Pacific (APAC). He held multiple leadership positions in sales, strategic marketing and general management across multiple businesses and geographies, including chief strategic customer officer for J&J MedTech. He also played a pivotal part in elevating the role of the APAC region as a growing centre for MedTech experimentation, digital innovation, and talent.

Discussing her replacement McEvoy said: “Tim has made the Asia Pacific into one of our fastest growing regions, and previously as Chief Customer Officer, he led a transformation of J&J’s relationships with hospital systems in the US. Tim is more than just my successor, he is a trusted friend and partner.

"When I had my fourth child, Tim ran the business while I was on leave, and when I went to run Vision, he backfilled my role as worldwide president of Ethicon, so it’s both fitting and meaningful that I am passing the baton to him now.”

Speaking on the his new role Schmid said: “Building on my 30-year career at Johnson & Johnson, I look forward to leading our incredible team of associates around the world who are propelling our MedTech business into the next era of healthcare.”
