US based digital health company Dario has announced the launch of a new smart blood sugar meter for Apple iPhone 15 users as November marks the start of Diabetes Awareness Month.

Following the iPhones recent switch to a type-C USB port, iPhone 15 user can now get direct connectivity for live blood sugar readings through Dario’s health management tools.

Now compatible with both Android and Apple users, the pocket-sized device includes a glucose meter, disposable test strip cartridge and a lancing device. It can automatically log results and promises to keep the user constantly connected to their care provider.

Almost half a billion people are living with diabetes around the world and according to the International Diabetes Federation that number is projected to increase by 25% in 2030 and by 51% in 2045.

The smart meter which works with the Dario app can also prompt the user when sugar levels change and gives actionable insights and alerts.

President of Dario, Rick Anderson said: "Dario is continuously innovating to stay ahead of trends and keep our members connected and on track with their goals. Our new iPhone 15 smart blood sugar meter is just another example of our ability to respond quickly to consumer needs and keep our members engaged over time."

With the increased use of smartphones in healthcare the advanced diabetes care devices market, including insulin pens, pumps, and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices, was valued at $21.8 billion in 2023. According to a GlobalData forecast, the market will reach sales of $33.4 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.34%.

In October 2023 Dario announced it signed a national preferred partner agreement with a top five national employee benefits consulting firm which will allow them to supply Dario's solution to their clients.

Also, in the same year an agreement with MedOne saw them integrate Dario's suite of digital health solutions as a complement to its digital diabetes solution, the Diabetes Care Path.

Is the healthcare industry ready to fully embrace the benefits of digitalization and AI?

The healthcare, pharma, and medical devices industries are often risk-averse compared to other sectors when adopting new technologies. However, mainly due to COVID-19, these sectors have witnessed an acceleration in digital transformation. AI can revolutionize the drug discovery process and significantly reduce the time and cost to get a drug to market, particularly in areas of unmet need. There is also huge potential for AI in medical diagnostics. However, using healthcare data for AI development raises data privacy concerns, thereby limiting its adoption.
