Kalogon launches custom wheelchair cushion Orbiter Med

The Orbiter Med integrates Kalogon’s APM system with the individualised postural support.

Kalogon has launched Orbiter Med, a custom wheelchair cushion intended to meet the individual seating and positioning needs of each patient.

The wheelchair cushion has received approval from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for the use of Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Code E2609 to bill Medicare.

Kalogon said the Orbiter Med integrates Kalogon’s Advanced Pressure Management (APM) system with the individualised postural support of a custom cushion that is reimbursable by insurance.

The APM system utilises a blend of air cell technology and machine learning to dynamically redistribute the user's weight according to custom settings configured by a clinician through the Kalogon App.

This app enables both users and clinicians to adjust pressure levels and seating preferences for various activities.

Clinicians have the option to customise the cushion with various modifications such as medial and lateral supports, adjustments for leg length discrepancies, and support for residual limbs.

Kalogon CEO and co-founder Tim Balz said: “Our first Orbiter cushion was created out of a need for innovation in seating for people at higher risk for pressure injuries, who have been ignored for decades.

“Orbiter has been proven to improve blood flow and has already changed the lives of countless customers living active seated lives, but we know that one size doesn’t fit all. Orbiter Med is a fully customised system that blends the best technology in pressure management with tailored stability and postural support specific to a patient’s needs.”

To distribute Orbiter Med cushions in the US, Kalogon has teamed up with National Seating & Mobility, which provides comprehensive mobility solutions in North America.

National Seating & Mobility chief supply chain officer Darren Lowman said: “Our collaboration with Kalogon will secure cushion demos for evaluative purposes in addition to technical training for our Assistive Technology Professionals to ensure our teams are prepared to make this wound prevention solution available in clinics nationally.”
