Terumo’s wholly owned subsidiary MicroVention has announced the commercial availability of its ERIC Retrieval Device in the US for ischemic stroke treatment.

The neurovascular team at Riverside Methodist in Columbus performed the first ERIC cases in the country as part of the initial limited release.

ERIC is a self-expanding laser-cut clot retriever equipped with several retrieval cages, located on a pusher wire delivery system.

In March last year, the company received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for the device.

The device, which can control thrombus through its cage-like design, features an atraumatic design that conforms to the natural vessel to provide soft, outward radial force and minimal vessel wall contact.

Designed to deliver thrombus control inside and outside of the device, ERIC provides no clot integration wait time to improve procedure efficiency. It also provides better treatment options for thrombectomy.

The company is offering the device in three sizes, which enables treatment of a wide vessel size range of 5.5mm down to 1.5mm.

It is also compatible with the company’s HEADWAY 17 and HEADWAY 21 microcatheters.

MicroVention president and CEO Carsten Schroeder said: “Today’s introduction of the ERIC Retrieval Device is guided by our continued commitment to meaningful advancement in stroke innovation.

“ERIC underscores this commitment to offering physicians and patients vital versatility when every second counts.”

The company’s integrated stroke solution portfolio also consists of the BOBBY balloon guide catheter, the WEDGE microcatheter, HEADWAY microcatheters, SOFIA catheters and the TRAXCESS guidewire.
