Canada-based medical device company Synaptive Medical has revealed its Modus X robotic exoscope, a high-definition digital imaging system to the European market.
The device, which assists surgeons in assessing magnified, 3D images during microsurgeries, will first be installed at the Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Federico II in Naples, Italy. The university hospital will benefit from the installation of this device, which is designed to enhance surgical procedures in neurosurgery, ENT, plastics, and the spine.
Synaptive Medical president Cameron Piron said: “This installation will help push the boundaries of surgical visualisation for Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Federico II and support it in its mission to redefine surgical standards."
Modus X, the fourth generation of Synaptive's robotic exoscope was presented in mid-2023. Features include redesigned 4K 3D optics, 27x magnification, robotic camera alignment, and voice guidance. Also new in the latest version of Modus X is the fluorescence-guided surgery, offering surgeons enhanced tissue differentiation capabilities.
Commenting on the installation, Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Federico II's director of neurosurgery Paolo Cappabianca said: "The Modus X will help enable our surgeons to perform even more effective and precise interventions for the benefit of our patients. We are particularly enthusiastic about the fluorescence-guided features of the exoscope, which will significantly enhance our capabilities."
In August 2023, the company received $900,000 in financial support from the Ontario government through the Ontario Together Fund. The money went towards the $2.8m project to expand manufacturing and research and development activities related to the company’s head-only magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system.
In the same month, Synaptive Medical, named Timothy J Scannell as the new chair of the board of directors.
In March 2023, the company also secured a $40m investment from Export Development Canada (EDC) to accelerate surgical, imaging and data technologies.
Currently, Synaptive Medical operates in 15 countries and is operational in 80 hospitals worldwide.
