Medical device company PatchClamp Medtech, in partnership with Product Creation Studio, is set to develop a dural repair graft placement system for surgeries.

The system is designed to address the durotomy challenges during cranial and spinal surgeries by providing an immediate watertight seal for durotomies, which are perforations in the dura that can lead to serious complications.

The device employs a unique graft-clasp mechanism that is specifically engineered to facilitate safe and immediate watertight sealing.

This potentially improves outcomes for patients undergoing minimally invasive and open craniospinal procedures.

PatchClamp Medtech co-founder Dr Marc Mayberg said: “Our device is not just a step forward in neurosurgical technology; it is a leap towards fundamentally changing how surgeons approach dural repairs. Achieving a watertight seal in a challenging surgical environment enhances patient safety and recovery, setting a new standard in surgical care.”

Designed for ease of use, the dural repair graft system features a single-hand disposable applicator that allows surgeons to operate effectively in constrained spaces.

To address the limitations of direct dural repair, the system integrates 3D-printed components with bioresorbable materials that are commercially available, demonstrating its proof of concept through rigorous in vitro and in vivo testing.

Product Creation Studio chief technology officer Scott Thielman said: “Working with the PatchClamp team has been inspiring. Their groundbreaking approach to surgical repair meshes perfectly with our mission to accelerate medical technology development that advances the field and improves patient outcomes.”

The device is yet to receive approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.
