Q'Apel Medical has introduced the new 072 Hippo Aspiration System for treating patients with a stroke caused by a large vessel occlusion.

The new stroke system, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), features the 072 Hippo Aspiration Catheter and its companion, the Cheetah.

The Hippo catheter’s adaptable tip is said to revolutionise accuracy in engaging and removing clots, delivering customised performance for different clot shapes and sizes.

This feature allows doctors to view and manage the critical phases of the procedure in real time, providing them with insights that were not accessible before.

Q'Apel Medical CEO King Nelson said: “It's in Q'Apel's DNA to bring to market highly differentiated products that truly provide a meaningful advantage and benefit to physicians and their patients. The Hippo Aspiration System also grants us the ability to offer physicians a complete stroke procedure.

“Hippo was designed to work with our market-leading Balloon Guide Catheter, Walrus, and now, we can marry the benefits of Walrus and the overwhelming evidence Balloon Guide Catheters offer with the game-changing technology of Hippo.”

The Hippo catheter's adaptive tip is complemented by the Cheetah, a companion guide that speeds up the delivery of Hippo to the clot face.

Hippo and Cheetah work together to provide speed, precision, and integration in thrombectomy procedures. They complement Q'Apel's Walrus Balloon Guide Catheter.

Baylor College of Medicine cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery director Omar Tanweer said: “Hippo's ability to adapt to various clot morphologies is impressive. Regardless of angulation, I can confirm engagement of the catheter on the clot, as I can now visualise this – which has never been possible before in an aspiration catheter.”

Q'Apel, which is focused on the development of technologies for neurovascular interventions, also provides the Armadillo 7F and 6F Access System and the Walrus Balloon Catheter System.
