Sawbones and Numalogics have collaboratively launched a web application named ENDPOINT for orthopaedic implant manufacturers.

The new platform enables the manufacturers to conduct virtual tests on Sawbones's industry-standard bone surrogate materials, potentially reducing the need for physical prototypes.

ENDPOINT allows engineers to test orthopedic screw designs using advanced computational modeling and simulation techniques.

Results from these virtual tests can be obtained within days, streamlining the development process for medical devices by saving time and resources.

Customers using the ENDPOINT platform can choose the type of mechanical screw test they require. They can then securely upload their screw design drawings to the cloud.

Subsequently, an automated system conducts the simulation, and the results are returned to the customer.

Sawbones said that the platform maintains data security and confidentiality throughout the process.

Sawbones biomechanical design engineer Amy Posch said: “We are happy to offer a CM&S tool that demonstrates a high level of credibility for axial screw insertion and pullout testing.

“Transparency in the models’ performance was important to convey and we are impressed with its verification and validation work.  We look forward to expanding the biomechanical material suite available within this platform.”

Sawbones and Numalogics have jointly developed virtual models of the Sawbones polyurethane foam.

This material is widely recognised as the industry standard for orthopedic implant testing.

The companies are also working on validating the existing virtual screw tests.
