United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust in the UK has announced the opening of the Skegness Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) to patients.

The £15m ($15.8m) facility provides a suite of advanced National Health Service (NHS) diagnostic services.

It introduces advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scanners, dental X-ray, and echocardiogram services to the town of Skegness for the first time.

The Skegness CDC also offers an array of services such as non-obstetric ultrasound and physiological testing. These include blood tests for paediatric and adult patients above the age of five, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring and standard ECGs.

Blood testing for chemotherapy patients is also currently available.

The Skegness CDC, built on land owned by the local leisure operator Teen Spirit has already welcomed its first subjects.

Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals Group chief executive professor Karen Dunderdale said: “We believe this to be the most significant NHS investment in Skegness in recent years and we are very proud to be delivering new diagnostic services that we know will make a huge difference to the local community.

“We have already seen great success in the Lincolnshire CDC programme as a whole, with more than 118,000 tests delivered to patients since it began in November 2021 and the creation of approximately 140 clinical and non-clinical job roles. This has been made possible thanks to developments like this with better partnership working across NHS services, including with local primary care providers.”

CDCs are established to provide a range of elective diagnostic services away from primary hospital sites.

They aim to facilitate quicker and easier access to tests, potentially closer to where patients live.

The investment in community diagnostic centres across Lincolnshire totals approximately £42m for this year.

This includes an expansion valuing £5m at Grantham in March this year and a £23m modular-built facility in Lincoln, which is expected to open to the public this month.

Construction of both the Skegness and Lincoln CDCs has been managed by Modern Methods of Construction specialist MTX Contracts.
