The Magnifico™ is a new open whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system manufactured by Italy-based medical diagnostic imaging systems developer Esaote.
The system is suitable for claustrophobic patients as the open magnet is designed to provide a more comfortable MRI experience for all patients, especially children.
The open system is also an ideal solution for more sophisticated applications such as MRI arthrography, as the patient can be easily accessed due to the wide opening and small magnet.
The Magnifico Open received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February 2022. The MRI system previously obtained European Union Medical Devices Regulation (MDR) certification in November 2021.
Design and features
Esaote’s Magnifico is a low-maintenance, open, permanent magnet stand-alone system with a compact footprint. The system combines advanced MRI technology for superior diagnostic quality with a permanent magnet that reduces operational expenses.
The system has a field strength of 0.4 Tesla and offers high-resolution imaging, with isotropic 3D slices of up to 0.3mm. It provides a comprehensive set of imaging sequences, including steady-state sequences, multiple fat saturation methods, and contrast media imaging. The system’s power consumption is less than 3kW.
The MRI includes a complete set of specially optimised dedicated coils for optimal imaging and an improved patient experience. It has a split-coil design and a transparent headcoil that improves patient comfort and positioning. The multichannel design enables a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and signal uniformity, which results in high spatial resolution.
The Magnifico has an ergonomic open patient table that can accommodate patients weighing up to 200kg (440lb). Its compact size enables it to fit into a space of 20m2 (212ft2), making it ideal for hospitals, imaging centres and in-office clinics.
Magnifico user interface details
The Magnifico is based on the Window type interface® and features an easy-to-use user interface and protocols optimised for high-quality imaging. It includes a complete set of pre-defined sequences and protocols for a streamlined workflow, as well as protocol-driven scanning for quick examinations and high throughput without compromising diagnostic accuracy.
The system comes with a complete software suite that includes a wide range of tools for image processing, display, and analysis. It is designed to ‘bridge the gap’ between conventional musculoskeletal imaging and whole-body imaging.
The MRI features complete networking and storage capabilities, allowing it to be used in stand-alone operations or as part of an integrated system. As a stand-alone scanner, the system comes with an integrated DVD storage and retrieval software package, printer output capability, and a patient-CD package.
The Magnifico system meets current data security requirements with automated antivirus security upgrades. It is compatible with the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) and Imaging Healthcare Specialists (HIS) standards and provides intelligent solutions for PACS and teleradiology communication.
Magnifico Open MRI technology details
The Magnifico Open is outfitted with new advanced technologies such as Speed-Up, True-Motion, and metal artifact reduction (MAR) that provide imaging flexibility across a wide range of clinical applications.
The Speed-Up technology assists in ensuring optimal diagnostic image quality with short scan times, thereby reducing examination times. The True-Motion technology enables the acquisition of real-time imaging of the joint in motion. This is a new tool for improving patient care, particularly in high-level sports medicine.
When used in combination with specific MAR sequences, Magnifico provides high-quality diagnostics even in patients with many implants. It is an ideal solution for post-surgical imaging as it has a low degree of susceptibility to metal compared with regular MRI.
