With the boom of digital and remote healthcare, and the increasing life expectancy of people, there is a rapidly growing need for more and more advanced medical devices, both implanted and external. At the same time, recent advances in microelectronics and the constantly miniaturising size of the components enable the design of highly sophisticated implanted devices that can be placed in the most sensitive areas of the body such as the brain, spine, heart and eyes.
Picosun’s atomic layer deposition (ALD) thin film coating technology offers a disruptive solution for implant manufacturers. Hermetic ALD encapsulation improves the reliability, functionality and lifetime of electronic and orthopaedic implants, potentially reducing the need for corrective or replacement surgeries. Cost savings can also be achieved when the base materials of the implant are, for example, stainless steels instead of noble or speciality metals.
ALD was originally brought into large scale use by the semiconductor industry in the early 2000s. Today, things like computers, smartphones, 5G, the internet of things (IoT), industrial automation, self-driving cars and augmented or virtual reality would not be possible without ALD. ALD allows for the deposition of ultra-thin, highly uniform and conformal material layers of exact thickness and chemical composition on a variety of substrates. Nanometer-thin ALD films are dense, pinhole-free, practically massless and dimensionless, and they provide inert, hermetic encapsulation around the coated object, whatever its shape or dimensions.
Picosun’s ALD solutions have been in use for years in various medical industries, including electronic implant protection, dental implant manufacturing, medical packaging and coating drug particles for controlled drug release. Our various coatings have been tested and proven to be non-cytotoxic, biocompatible and to have antibacterial or bioactive functions. One example of this is in dental implants, where the coating enhances the osseointegration process, thus making the healing time faster.
Join our webinar to learn more about how ALD can revolutionise your products and create added value and competitive edge to keep you spearheading your industry! We will present the latest results on the superior hermeticity of ALD encapsulants as a protective barrier against human tissue fluid, and the excellent aseptic qualities of ALD coatings – suppression of bacterial growth and ultra-low levels of bacterial endotoxins, surpassing even the strictest requirements of implant industries.
