BDL.consulting, first named Bartek Design, has become prosperous at designing and generating consumer products for clients.

The company primarily provides services to the Medical Device sector, specialising in developing handheld and wearable devices like drug delivery insulin pens, inhalers and glucose monitoring devices.

Being able to offer a complete end to end service from product design to manufacturing is quite a portfolio, and this has been achieved by approximately 30 years of industry service by its Director Barry Lyons. Bartek Design itself has been in business for 18 years.

“An essential skillset to keep the above attributes on schedule, is the ability to do good project management”, states Barry Lyons. He has been trained in PMP and Prince 2 project management methods and uses these tools to keep track of the daily progress on the customer’s projects. Without implementing good Project Management methodology and using these tools, Barry knows that the projects would fail to meet their target deliverables of Time, Scope and Cost.

Customers are dependable on Project Deliverables. Tracking the scope changes effectively by implementing a change control board with the customer is vital to controlling the project and in keeping the customer informed.

On a business level Barry Lyons recognises the fact that failure by suppliers to meet deadlines for customers results in no repeat business, so therefore keeping track of the project scope is an important part of the service to his customers and is critical for keeping his business alive.

After receiving the ‘Irish Business Top 100 in Project Management” award Barry Lyons commented: “Receiving this award has been justification of our strict adherence to good project management principles and fundamentally highlights this organisational skillset to our customers.”

Commenting on the company progress for the award interview Barry Lyons explained: “Over the years I have found that, as a service orientated consultancy, I have had to constantly re-invent myself and my firm to keep up with changes in business practice and demands.

Evolution, reinvention and constantly upgrading the skillset is how we achieve this. For instance, we recently we renamed the company to ‘Bartek Design Ltd. consulting’, or BDL.consulting for short, using one of the new internet ‘dot’ domain names. By changing the name to something that had a medical reference, it has helped us attract more targeted business clients to our website.

“Fundamentally, I believe that the reasons for our success are due to having approximately 30 years’ experience in the plastics manufacturing industry, coupled with the knowledge of working with global corporations across three continents. Having good work ethics, manners, respect for your clients and most importantly the skillset that they require are all very important attributes.

“This has all contributed to getting us where we are today.” As part of this focus on innovation and evolution, Barry and his team are committed to using the latest technology to enhance the services they offer clients, as he is keen to highlight.

“As part of our commitment to evolution and reinvention, we embrace new technology and update our systems constantly. We have invested in 3D modelling and free form surfacing software, Mould Rheology software, and most recently, Tolerance Stack Analysis Software. We use this technology to validate our plastic part designs before they go to production tooling.

“This is a key advantage to have over other design houses, and it is my mould design and injection moulding background experience that has been key in implementing this in our company. This experience is critical in assisting to design parts that can be manufactured, cutting down on the Design for Manufacturing (DFM) process, resulting in faster product development and lead times to market.”

“3D printing technology is another tool in our growing arsenal. This technology has helped us immensely, and its use has drastically cut the cost of prototype tooling and development lead times to our customers, highlighting the benefits of staying at the very cutting edge of technological developments.”

Alongside technology, Barry firmly believes in supporting his staff, as they are central to ensuring excellence for his clients. As such, he is eager to explain the internal culture in his company and how this helps drive new ideas and innovations. “Internally we are primarily an ‘ideas’ firm. We like to promote ‘Imagineering’ and to make it ‘Enjoyneering’ for the staff. To stay ahead of your competitors, you need to think outside the box and be creative with your solutions. These are the ideas and culture that I nurture within the firm and the staff enjoy the challenge.”

Looking to the future, Barry is keen to drive continued innovation at BDL.consulting, helping to support an even wider range of clients, as he is proud to conclude: “Moving forward, I would like to grow the company to increase the service capacity for more design, software analysis and laboratory testing. This would provide a turnkey product development service to our customers.”
