Lithium-ion batteries or in short LiPo’s are rechargeable batteries with lithium-ion technology. A rechargeable battery can be charged and recharged many times. It is composed of one or more electrochemical cells. Lithium ions move from the negative electrode through an electrolyte to the positive electrode during discharge, and back when charging. The term “accumulator” or “accu” is used as it accumulates and stores energy through a reversible electrochemical reaction.

The Lithium-ion battery is growing in popularity since it first entered the market in 1991. In 2019, the Nobel Prize committee in Chemistry even rewarded the development of the lithium-ion batteries to John B Goodenough, M Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino. Today, this rechargeable, powerful and lightweight battery technology is used in a vast number of applications, ranging from mobile phones, laptop computers to wearable devices such as smartwatches, headsets, fitness trackers and all thoughts of electric vehicles.

The most important characteristics of a lithium-ion battery are its high energy density and the low internal resistance, so they are able to handle high current loads. Lithium-based accumulators are the leaders when it comes to energy density. They provide higher specific energy than other lithium rechargeable battery types and often are used in applications where the weight and size are critical features.

Renata offers a wide range of Lithium-Ion batteries. Renata Lithium-Ion accumulators are available with a capacity of 35mAh to 2700mAh with a 3.7-3.8V nominal voltage. The Renata ICP Series incorporate an internal safety circuit that provides fail-safe protection against overcharging, overload incl. short circuit and over-discharge. They are up to 20% lighter than conventional cylindrical cell batteries, and the compact packaging enables design engineers to utilise thinner batteries for many OEM applications.

The top-quality production process of Renata’s Lithium Ion rechargeable batteries safely prevents the bulging of the battery during usage, which sometimes happens on batteries produced conventionally.
